EUROPEAN PROJECT

Promotion of Renewable Energy for Water production through Desalination
PRODES project is focused on the promotion of technologies for coupling the use of renewable Energies with Desalination processes. UNIPA's main tasks within the project will be the organization of 40hrs courses for higher education (to be host in Universities or Research Institutes), 8hrs seminars for professionals, and workshops for joining researchers, companies (Small and Medium Enterprises) and public authorities.

The MEDIRAS project will optimise a solar desalination system and demonstrate its cost effectiveness and reliability. The modular system set-up is based on the innovative Membrane Distillation (MD) technology. MD is favourably applicable for small distributed desalination systems in the capacity range between 0.1-20 m³/day. The technology is very robust against different raw water conditions and is suitable for operation with renewable sources, like solar energy.

The “Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica dei Processi e dei Materiali” (DICPM), established in 1969, is fully committed to Fundamental and Applied Research in Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences. The aim is to reach excellence in research, while contributing to produce graduates of the highest scholarship and with skills that will enable them to prosper in their careers and to adapt to a fast changing field like Chemical Engineering.

The DICPM has three specific tasks:
1. To be engaged in research programs that contribute to the development of fundamental knowledge in the fields of Chemical Engineering and Material Sciences, procure support for this research on a continuous basis, and train graduate students. Research activities at DICPM ensure that our members remain at the technological forefront of their respective areas of specialization.

2. To provide a high-quality education for students in Chemical Engineering through a comprehensive curriculum distributed in three levels that emphasizes basic science, mathematics, engineering and material science, and engineering design. DICPM staff members are expected to maintain their high reputations as engaged teachers and to provide a stimulating educational environment.

3. To be of service to the community at large and to provide the engineering community opportunities for advanced and continuing education.
